Tame Impala has released a new 10th anniversary box set of ‘Lonerism’, which includes new songs ‘Retina Show’ and ‘Sidetracked Soundtrack’.
The 2012 LP special edition was announced in February and released yesterday (May 26).
It comes with three vinyl records as well as a 24-page booklet. Unreleased demo versions of ‘Retina Show’ and ‘Sidetracked Soundtrack’, two songs from the ‘Lonerism’ sessions that didn’t make the final album, are among the bonus tracks. Both can be heard below.
The reissue also includes an entire vinyl side dedicated to “assorted sketches” from 2010 to 2012.
‘Retina Show’ and ‘Sidetracked Soundtrack’ can be heard below.
Tame Impala marked a decade since the release of ‘Lonerism’ by performing the album in its entirety during the band’s headline set at California’s Desert Daze last October. ‘She Just Won’t Believe Me,’ from the album, was performed for the first time, and closer ‘Sun’s Coming Up,’ from the album, was played for the first time since 2010.
On Instagram the same month, bandleader and songwriter Kevin Parker reflected on the album’s creation. “It’s difficult to put into words what the album means to me right now.” Making music was a very special time for me,” he wrote. “In some ways, it was the moment when I truly discovered myself as an artist.” Following the release of [2010 debut] ‘Innerspeaker,’ I felt a renewed sense of purpose… calling… whatever you want to call it.
“I had finally given myself permission to let music take over my being completely… to become totally immersed in my own world of recording music. So I had this new sense of creative freedom. I felt free to be ambitious, weird, pop, experimental, whatever, and didn’t feel judged because I was finally just doing it for myself and believed in myself.”
Parker has collaborated with Thundercat on new song ‘No More Lies,’ released a song for the soundtrack of fantasy adventure film Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, and performed on crutches with a fractured hip in Mexico since the announcement of the LP.
